Remember the story of the tortoise and the hare?
So often we want to be the hare in the story, racing to recovery. We want to be healed and feel whole right now, because it’s the hole inside us, the empty, broken feeling that keeps us where we are. But, it was the tortoise who won the race.
Slow and steady. Give yourself permission to move at a slower pace. Give yourself some grace to stumble and fall. Don’t expect to wake up tomorrow a different person. Instead, expect to wake up on the road, ready to travel it for one more day.
Don’t try to keep up with your friends and family who aren’t on your road. They’re moving at a different pace because they’re traveling a different path. Take your time, rest when you need to, observe the scenery as you travel.
It took you a long time to recognize the hole you were trying to fill, it may take you just as long to begin to feel whole. Don’t give up. Don’t turn back. Keep going. One step at a time. One breath at a time.
And if you do stray off your designated path and you find yourself lost, simply turn back and find your way again. Again and again and again, because each time you return, you’ll be just a little further down the path. You’ll be just a little more wiser and able to recognize the wrong turns.
